Tips from the “Wine Swilling Troubadour”
January 14, 2009
Beginning this month, What’s Up With JD? will be adding tidbits about the trendy and newly discovered wines, as well as “not so trendy” budget wines (we are in a recession), he and his friends are enjoying these days.
So, here is the first installment of Tips from the “Wine Swilling Troubadour”:
During the more festive holiday season, JD enjoyed The Prisoner 2007 Meritage. This 2007 red wine blends 50% Zinfandel with 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Syrah, 9% Petite Sirah, 2% Charbono, and 1% Grenache for great complexity. From Orin Swift cellars, this wine goes for about $34/bottle; however, JD says, “I loved this hearty, full-bodied, fruity wine. It is so intensely decadent, you can’t possibly be bummed that you spent $30+ on a bottle of wine.” Ok, the holidays are over now, so, it is back to reality. There is a recession going on and everyone is on a budget…. (Don’t forget that JD is still a struggling rock musician—join our fanmail list, please!*) So, what is JD, et al, drinking now? A favorite budget wine is Vins Perrin’s La Veille Ferme Cote du Ventoux. It’s a simple, unpretentious red wine and can be found for $5-7/bottle. It is universally recognized to have one of the best quality-price ratios there is. JD’s opinion: “If you’re broke but want something decent, drink this. It won’t compromise your taste buds at all. And…an even better value is the $22 4L box–the spout keeps it fresh.”

“JD is a sophisticated, renaissance entertainer who can create a party by writing a new song on the spot, singing it, playing it on the piano or guitar .. and, in no time, the wine starts flowing!” --Nancy H, SongsAlive!
