Tips from the “Wine Swilling Troubadour”
January 14, 2009
Beginning this month, What’s Up With JD? will be adding tidbits about the trendy and newly discovered wines, as well as “not so trendy” budget wines (we are in a recession), he and his friends are enjoying these days.
So, here is the first installment of Tips from the “Wine Swilling Troubadour”:
During the more festive holiday season, JD enjoyed The Prisoner 2007 Meritage. This 2007 red wine blends 50% Zinfandel with 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Syrah, 9% Petite Sirah, 2% Charbono, and 1% Grenache for great complexity. From Orin Swift cellars, this wine goes for about $34/bottle; however, JD says, “I loved this hearty, full-bodied, fruity wine. It is so intensely decadent, you can’t possibly be bummed that you spent $30+ on a bottle of wine.” Ok, the holidays are over now, so, it is back to reality. There is a recession going on and everyone is on a budget…. (Don’t forget that JD is still a struggling rock musician—join our fanmail list, please!*) So, what is JD, et al, drinking now? A favorite budget wine is Vins Perrin’s La Veille Ferme Cote du Ventoux. It’s a simple, unpretentious red wine and can be found for $5-7/bottle. It is universally recognized to have one of the best quality-price ratios there is. JD’s opinion: “If you’re broke but want something decent, drink this. It won’t compromise your taste buds at all. And…an even better value is the $22 4L box–the spout keeps it fresh.”

“JD is a sophisticated, renaissance entertainer who can create a party by writing a new song on the spot, singing it, playing it on the piano or guitar .. and, in no time, the wine starts flowing!” --Nancy H, SongsAlive!

An Interview with JD Feighner
November 19, 2008
1. Other artists you have worked with?
I’ve recorded over 300 songs and 10 albums with other artists including a piece with Lajon Witherspoon from Sevendust on a Henry Rollins tribute album as well as worked with Igloo & Hartley.
2. Favorite Artists
Jamiroquai and Dave Matthews
3. How long have you been in the game?
I’m a third generation musician, I have been producing for 9 years now, singing and songwriting for 5 years..
4. Favorite Quote or Saying
My favorite toast is ‘here’s to a long life and a happy one, a quick death and a painless one, a pretty girl and a true one, and a cold beer and another one’
5. Favorite color and why…
Really? Do I have to answer this? Blue. Because it makes my eyes more blue
6. You keep your motivation by?
Biggest challenge – a lot of work and not a lot in return off the bat. Having my music heard. Getting feedback from fans. Recognition for my work.
7. Biggest accomplishment(s)?
Putting out the album ‘Sundays at 1620′, finishing it and being happy with it.
8. Funniest moment on stage?
Me in a huge fro singing Michael Jackson’s Thriller…fans said it was awesome, but to some it may have been funny.
9. How do you keep your skills up to par?
I’m always working on a new song, picking music apart, analyzing songs, running scales and vocalizing, and writing songs.
10. Biggest obstacle faced thus far?
Making the album ‘Sundays at 1620′ was an obstacle in between producing songs, EPs, and albums for clients. Writing lyrics can be challenging and the biggest obstacle is of course getting people to listen to the album and promotions. That’s why I hired a manager / promoter.
11. Upcoming project(s)?
I have two new songs nearing completion: “By a Thread” is a dark, pathetic cry-out for help. The style is lounge / jazz mix with rock n roll song. “On my own” is a rock song about breaking up with a girl b/c it’s too hard to be on tour.
12. Words of Wisdom
Have patience and strive for perfection.
13. Worst habit?
I’m late for everything.
14. Best attribute?
I put others first.
15. What do you value the most?
The way music can make me feel when I listen to it. I can be having a bad day and I get lost in music and the bad day is gone.
16. What makes the band unique?
What happened to the days where a band doesn’t have to be totally unique or have a gimmick? What about the bands that are good, that entertain, that have a solid sound and please listeners?
17. What is your competitive advantage?
I’d like to believe that my song writing is true talent and the diversity in my music is unique.
18. Do you think the Indie artist will ever get mainstream acceptance?
They already have in a lot of ways, but that is what makes an indie artist an indie artist by not being mainstream… Take for example, Copeland, Bright Eyes, Distilled Canvas, Honorary Title, The Floormats, and indie rock or grunge bands.
19. What do you want to be most remembered for?
Well, first being a good and caring person, then musically: writing and making great songs.

Dr. John Feighner Plays Caravan
August 27, 2008
A sample of JD’s music legacy. JD’s dad, Dr. John Feighner, was a very accomplished musician and a funny guy.
In addition, Dr. Feighner, an internationally recognized psychiatrist, founded the Feighner Research Institute, a clinical neuropsychopharmacology research center, which for over 30 years conducted extensive clinical trials, predominantly testing medications for mood disorders, anxiety disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, and migraine. Dr. Feighner was the primary investigator in over 225 clinical trials on more than 30 antidepressants and countless other psychotropic medications. He published 125 scientific papers and several books, had given over 1,000 seminars, and was known as one of the world’s leading experts in clinical psychopharmacology.
Here he plays “Caravan” on the piano during a Rancho Santa Fe Big Band concert.

Filming of “The Greyside” video
June 28, 2008
Last Tuesday, JD had a big party at which the filming for his music video of “The Greyside” was completed. Lots of folks showed up and it was kind of a wild night, especially when the firetruck showed up.

JD to appear at South Park Music Tour
May 31, 2008
JD Feighner to appear at South Park Music Tour, Saturday, June 28th, Patio, 3-4:30PM. Y’all come on out!

The South Park Music Tour is the highest festival in the country, according to its promoters, and that’s not just a nod to the fact that Fairplay is just under 10,000 feet in elevation. Hell, even the zip code ends in 420. But beyond that, the South Park Music Tour is a gem for discovering bands and the lineup is made up predominantly of emerging artists. If each week you look at the local calendar and wonder who a lot of the local bands are, this is the festival to check out. Lots of Colorado bands play the festival and the ones who aren’t local regularly tour the region. YOU NEED TO KNOW: The old saying in Fairplay is “Come on vacation, leave on probation.” So, if you must break the law while in Fairplay, be very, very discreet about it."
JD’s song, “Wavy Baby”
May 9, 2008
Wavy Baby achieves 5 star status at Garageband.com
“The five-star display is graded on a steep curve: almost 65% of songs receive 2.5 – 3.5 stars, and only the top 1% of songs receive more than 4.5 stars. “
